Teaching Philosophy: My BA was in English language and literature at the University of Sulaimani. After I completed my study, I worked as a translator and interpreter in a private company. In 2011, I was awarded a scholarship to study my masters abroad. I started my masters in January 2012 at the University of Northumbria in the UK, and obtained my master degree in TESOL in June 2013. After completing my master’s degree, I was employed at the University of Halabja. I now teach various subjects at the English department. In 2014, I participated in IKRUPP program which was sponsored by the US embassy in Iraq and administered by IREX organization. The aim of the program was to improve university leadership and enhance teaching methods, strengthen curricula at the Universities in Kurdistan. The program was a blended course, a combination of 9 month-online course plus a number of workshops in Hawler city and an intensive course at Virginia Tech in the US. In 2018, I was selected by the US embassy in Iraq as one of the participants of Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program; for 10 weeks, I participated in many training courses, workshops, conferences and cultural activities at the University of Texas in the USA. I have been teaching at University of Halabja since 2013. Currently, I am teaching Language Teaching Methodology, Listening and Speaking and language Testing. Teaching and learning Philosophy My teaching philosophy based on the belief that, beyond teaching the content of the courses, teachers should help learners to become autonomous. In other words, learners should be responsible for their own learning. Henri Holec , the father of learner autonomy, defines learner autonomy as ‘’ the ability to take charge of one’s own learning’’. I believe that teaching does not only mean transferring knowledge from the teacher to the students. Teachers have to also help students to become independent and lifelong learners. To do this, I have tried many strategies with my students. First, I always try to change students’ attitudes from passive receivers to become active participants and less dependent. Students should not consider their teachers as their only source of information. I always tell my students not to rely on teachers too much; they have to develop a sense of responsibility for their own learning I also encourage my students to use other resources such as library, the internet etc. to find materials and increase their knowledge. Second, during class activities, as a teacher, I will try to facilitate the process of learning for the students, instead of taking the traditional role of a teacher; I will try to be one of the partners or co-communicators in class. Finally, learner-centered teaching is another approach, through which I try to encourage my students to reflect on their own learning, make their own decisions and also set their learning goals.
